Today is the anniversary of the Great New England Hurricane of ’38. In addition to causing massive destruction up and down the New England coastline, many credit the storm with helping to speed the demise of trolley service through Providence’s East Side Railroad Tunnel. With ridership already waning, extensive washouts along the route helped raise costs to the point where service was unsustainable. You can read more about the East Side Railroad Tunnel in our ‘zine Underneath Providence: Findings Thus Far, available for only four bucks plus s/h.
