HAND PAINTED SIGNS – SOUTH PHILADELPHIA

phila_sign_04
The faded text in the middle reads: “But Lucy, I’ve got to have this building!” – apparently thought by Charlie Brown while Lucy screams in his ear about what a poor investment an industrial building in South Philadelphia would be for someone still in grade school. Or maybe not? I guess it depends if Charlie can get a loan with a good APR.

Dashboard Detritus

parking
Printed ephemera from up and down the East Coast.
My initial reaction to the demise of parking meters was negative (partially nostalgia for the loss of another civic mechanism, like the subway token or the pay phone, partially a practical consideration because now there is a lot less bike parking in the city), but I have grown to like the accumulation of these things on my dashboard. I like physical reminders of my travels and these have become domestic passport stamps of sorts. And I’m into the interaction with other parkers that these things inspire. Two of these came off of people’s dashboards who were leaving before their time was up and offered them to me as I walked to the pay-kiosk. The Phila one had like an hour left, so I offered to give the guy a dollar or two. He refused and just told me to “pay it forward.”

Mmmmmmm- Baltimore.

The Packaging You Never See

babydoll
The other day while walking through Restaurant Depot I realized that where was all this weird/rad commercial packaging that no one outside of the Restaurant industry ever sees. Here are 20 designs that caught my eye. The lighting sucked so sorry for the grainy flicks.

The Wheel of Time • Yes I am a Nerd • Book 12 Release @ Midnight

the-gathering-storm
Great books and shitty cover art has always been the case with the Wheel of Time series. When my good friend Laz gave me a copy of Book 1 “Eye of the World” way back in high school, I was very skeptical; But with his stellar review I dove in and 12 books, 8429 pages later I am quite hooked. The series follows Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al’Vere and Nynaeve al’Meara as they go from country bumpkins to saviors of the world. Robert Jordan weaves themes of a balance, duality, respect for nature and the cyclical nature of time with epic battles and witty dialogue.
In March 2006, Jordan disclosed that he had been diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis, and that with treatment, his ife expectancy was four years, a little more then year a later on September 16, 2007 Jordan passed away leaving his life’s work unfinished. For the past 2 years Harriet Rigney (Jordan’s Wife) and Brandon Sanderson have been finishing his last book from his notes and oral dictations while he was sick. They had to break up the the final book “The Gathering Storm” in to 3 because there was so much of the story left. The Prologue and first chapter were released in September and have been received well. My bro is going to get me a signed copy at the release party at the BYU campus tonight, I can’t wait!

Vanishing Point, run by Explorer, Photographer, and Writer, Michael Cook documents the sewer systems, mines and abandon buildings. Cook, also has gained access to the utility tunnels of bunch of Canada’s Universities in that vein I’ll try to dig up some photos of Alex and my trip though the utility tunnels of Carnegie Mellon, and my trip though the Harvard tunnels. After the break i’ve included some of my favorite of Cooks underground photos

24 Hour Horror Film Fest.

A_Lukas_all_the_colors_600
So this Saturday / Sunday Exhumed Films is showing 24 straight hours of horror movies at the I-House in West Philadelphia. In conjunction with this noon to noon event, Justin Miller organized an print show for the lobby “based on the imagery and themes of the films shown in grindhouse theatres from the ’60s to ’80s”. My contribution is above and will be on sale during the show along with new prints by Chris Kline, Bill McRight, Mark Price, Greg Pizzoli and many more.

“The Town” • Filming in Cambridge

thetown3
For past 2 days “The Town” was being filmed in Harvard Square. The movie is based on “The Prince of Thieves” a book by Chuck Hogan. Ben Affleck adapted the screenplay, and is directing and starring in it. The Plot revolves around a criminal from Charlestown who falls for a Cambridge Banker. I’m no Affleck fanboy but I have has a soft spot in my heart, due to his cambridge heritage. And if you can forget *cough cough* “Gigli” *cough cough* “Pearl harbor”, he’s made some good flicks like Good Will Hunting, anything by Kevin Smith and most recently “Gone Baby Gone”. It’s good to see with “Gone Baby Gone” and now “The Town” he’s writing the screenplays considering he and Mat won that Oscar for Best Original Screenplay
thetown7
Ben’s Co-Star is Jon Hamm aka Don Draper aka Richard Whitman on “Mad Men” If you don’t watch “Mad Men” on AMC you are missing out, start on S1 and catch up.
I didn’t take a ton of photos (I do have a day job) but there are some good stalker shots of the some of the cast and the crew after the jump

Baltimore, This Thursday.

baltimore_graphic-753807
I think mentioned before having a new, large drawing in Baltimore as part of Maryland Art Place’s seventh annual Curators Incubator series (my work was included as part of In Our Nature, curated by Rachel Sitkin). The closing reception is this Thursday, October 22nd. Rachel is going to be giving a short talk with Michelle Hagewood and myself at 5pm, so if anyone out there is in Baltimore, I hope you can attend. The talk is at 5 and the reception goes until 7. Then, I’m going to rush back to West Phila to try to catch Baltimore-based Future Islands at PILAM (figures that when the Baltimore band plays Philadelphia, I’ll be in Baltimore…sigh).

Loma Prieta Earthquake

The New York Times has a fascinating / terrifying slide show of images from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The caption for the above photo reads: “From a press tour of the collapsed Cypress Freeway in Oakland. The red circles indicate where bodies were located.”
