Today I killed my friendster account. “What’s friendster?” you ask well kid before myspace and facebook flickr and twitter there was Friendster. It was an Internet sensation talked about on NPR and a hit with hipsters as it heralded a new age of social networking. But friendster was slow to update and their site was buggy and people drifted away. Myspace did the same thing just better, just as has facebook has since done the same thing with less sleaze.
I had not checked my friendster account in years and I sign on to myspace only play some lame myspace game I think I’ll delete it soon. Will I join facebook probably not, if you are actually my friend you have my number. Call anytime.

Rumor on the street is that tomorrow night Bruce will play the ENTIRE Born To Run album at Giants Stadium. Oh man, oh man am I excited.

Swiss publisher Nieves is probably the most recognized producer of artists zines. While some are just simple black and white xeroxes folded in half, others are full color offset with perfect bindings. I got Blueberry Express by Misaki Kawai and This Kind of Livin’ by Taylor McKimens in the mail today and they both look great, although I’m nervous about the binding on Blueberry Express and the shipping costs from Europe are always high.

This past tuesday I went with my good friend Vin to Redemption Tattoo to get some work done by Ben McClellan. I have no ink myself but I often think about getting some . It was very cool experience to watch and document the process from start to finish. A small sample of the photos after the break

Dan Murphy generously hooked us up with the new issue of Stuck On The Map. This volume is super thick with various colored paper stocks and the cover is, get this, xerox over four colored stickers stuck on a white glossy cover stock. So good. Dan has been an inspiration for a long time, and I’m so happy to live in Philadelphia because otherwise I would have no idea how to get his zines. (UPDATE: Dan has copies for sale HERE.) And just like the Stuck On The Map book, the more I leaf through this, the more I see.

For the better part of the summer, Steve Powers has been painting A Love Letter For You on the roof tops that run along the Market-Frankford elevated subway line in West Philadelphia.
There are a whole bunch of murals I didn’t get to photograph, a few more in-progress, and all are well worth the trip to see in person. If you are going with a friend, keep in mind that two tokens are $2.90, but two rides cost four bucks. Also, you can switch directions at every above-ground station, but once you go underground, it gets tricky. If you bring a cute friend and end up at 40th St. wanting to go back out west, have her ask the token taker if you can switch directions.
The official site has better photos, shot by the venerable Adam Wallacavage and Zoe Strauss, but there is really no substitute for seeing this project in person. A full list of mural locations along with their titles and from which direction they are best viewed is also on the official site. Funding for this massive project came through a grant from the Pew Exhibitions Initiative and Mural Arts.

I always find it pretty amusing when people do the exact opposite of what a sign says. For years under the overpass where Charlestown Ave goes under the Green Line buy the Museum of Science , there was was a sign that said “Please do not deface this wall.” and next to it in spray paint was written “Billy Lee for Mayor”
In this case, when a bike was parked in front of the no bike sign someone wrote a funny note in response.

I made this poster last night and today for an upcoming show here at 1026. The bands are Chain & The Gang (Nation of Ulysses‘ Ian Svenonius‘ new project) and Drink Up Buttercup. If anyone wants to come, the show is Tuesday, September 22nd at 8:00 pm at Space 1026. It’ll cost you eight bucks to get in and the show is all ages.
